Dangerous Crossroads Ahead

The interaction between citizens and law enforcement officers is nothing new. However, as technology has evolved and created the ability for anyone to share personal recordings widely online, these interactions have become the topic of ongoing national conversations—for better or worse.

The Dangerous Crossroads course examines the intersection of the First and Fourth Amendments with regard to police-citizen interactions and provides practical tips for dealing with situations where citizens legitimately exercise their constitutional rights, as well as those instances where the goal is capturing a negative reaction from officers. Participants in this course will learn:

  • What a constitutional activist is and techniques they may use with law enforcement.
  • What it looks like when First and Fourth Amendment rights conflict.
  • How to recognize “baiting” tactics used during traffic stops.
  • What the law says about filming police activity and police facilities.
  • The constitutional protections around profanity and other speech towards civilians and police.
